La Vache!

La Vache

La Vache! is a Parisian steakhouse that offers a simple, no-muss-no-fuss menu of just one dish:  Steak Frites (French for Steak and Fries).  In fact, there is no menu at all, you simply just let them know how you would like your steak done .

The meal starts off with a warm baguette to share, then a green salad with walnuts, radish and a vinaigrette dressing.  The salad wasn’t anything special, but it was fresh and the portion was decent.

Our Entrecôte steak (rib-eye) arrived on a platter, already pre-cut into slices.  Our waitress served a portion of the steak onto our plates and left the remaining on the platter to be kept warmed with tealight candles.  The perfectly cooked medium-rare steak was juicy, tender and flavorful and served with a pot of La Vache!’s secret recipe béarnaise sauce. Though it is not uncommon to serve this creamy and buttery sauce with steak frites, I personally find it too rich with steak.

And of course, accompanying the steak was an unlimited serving of perfectly thin and crispy fries.  One thing you should know about me is that I LOVE fries.  I’m the type of gal who would order a dish just because it is served with fries.  So, you have to believe me when I say these fries are delicious!

To complete our fulfilling meal, we had the Raspberry Clafoutis and Chocolate brownie for dessert.  I’ve never had a clafoutis before, so I was pleasantly surprised with this not-overly-sweet custard-like pudding with whole raspberries suspended in it.

The decor is very bistro-inspired, with red and white checked table clothes and matching red banquettes.  All the walls are colorfully painted with French monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.

Our visit to La Vache! was for lunch, and the set included dessert and cost $258 per person. The cost for dinner is the same, but dessert is excluded.

Trust me when I say it isn’t easy to find a restaurant in Hong Kong that serves a decent and affordable steak.  So next time you have a steak (or fries) craving, I would suggest you hit La Vache!
