Cali-Mex Spinach Quesadilla

Spinach Quesadilla ($78 + $40 for full portion)

A new California-style Mexican restaurant has taken Hong Kong by storm, with 7 new locations popping up in the city in the span of 7 months, 4 of which opened up in September 2014.  Last month, I was invited to one of their new locations on Staunton Street in Central for a tasting.

Cali-Mex Angus Steak with Nachos

Cali-Mex Pulled Pork Burrito

Pulled Pork Burrito with Black Beans and Salsa Chipotle ($88)

Cali-Mex Soft Baja Fish Taco

Baja Fish Soft Taco with Salsa Chipotle ($98)

Cali-Mex Churros with Chocolate Sauce

Churros with Chocolate Sauce ($38)

Fortunately there were quite a few people at the dinner to share the food, so I was able to sample the entire  menu of Burritos, Quesadillas, Tacos, Saladas and Nachos.  The way the menu is designed is quite interesting – you first select the item you want (Burritos, Tacos, Nachos, etc) and then you choose the filling and then your spice level – making the combinations endless (see menu at bottom).

The Grilled Chicken Salada served in a crispy shell was one of my favourites because it was a healthy salad that was exploding with flavours. Another must try is the Chipotle Pulled Pork, which is a 24 hour marinated pork shoulder smothered in a smoky BBQ sauce.    We had the pulled pork with the burrito, which I normally don’t like because I find it too filling, but I didn’t mind this burrito at all because of the juicy pulled pork.

I’m not a fan of sweets, so it didn’t bother me too much that the Churros weren’t as good as most of us had hoped.  Another negative of Cali-Mex was the price of the Guacamole, I’m a  Guacamole lover so being charged $18 for a serving a Guac really hurts!  But I’ve been told they charge a steep price for it is because it is all home-made, so it is costly to make.

Using imported quality-meats from Australia, US and New Zealand and locally grown organic produce, your food is made-to-order at Cali-Mex.   To ensure they use the freshest ingredients, everything is brought in from their kitchen (at a different location) twice a day.

Cali-Mex have recently launched a new online service that allows you to enjoy their signature burrito at home or in the office. Last weekend I tried the online ordering and found the website easy to navigate and the food arrived at my door in under 60 minutes as promised.  Now hubby and I have another tasty option for dinner when we are too lazy to peel our butts off the couch!

(Oh, and those who like their spice, do go for the Salsa Brava which is the spiciest level.)
