Yonge Piggies

Yonge Piggies Hot Dog

My fellow Toronto friends living in Hong Kong, if you have a craving for a street vendor hot dog, Yonge Piggies hits close to home.

Yonge Piggies import their sausages from Canada and they prepare them vendor-style by chargrilling them until the are crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.  They are then served on a slightly toasted bun loaded with your favorite toppings and condiments. You are only allowed to select 4 toppings, so I choose my favorite caramelized onions, jalapeno, sauerkraut and relish (+yellow mustard and ketchup).

Sausage selections include Hickory Smoked, Picante Pepper, Honey Garlic and Ceddar.

Toppings include bacon bits, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, corn, jalapeno, olives, onions, sauerkraut, sautéed mushrooms, relish, tomato.  Part of the vendor experience is to be able load up your hot dog with unlimited toppings yourself, but at Yonge Piggies they do it behind the counter for you, I was a bit disappointed with this aspect.  Nonetheless, the yumminess of their authentic hot dogs completely made up for this point.

Yonge Piggies also offers the French-Canadian staple, the Poutine, which are french fries topped with brown gravy and cheese curds.  I usually avoid this greasy-heart-attack-dish, but figured what the heck, how often do I get Canadian comfort food, eh?  But, this poutine was a bit of a let down, the gravy wasn’t rich enough and it didn’t have enough cheese.

The name of this joint pays homage to the Yonge Street (pronounced young) in Toronto that has many hot dog vendors.

Other than hot dogs, Yonge Piggies also serves burritos, pulled pork sandwiches, lobster rolls and chili bowls. I’ve only tried their hotdogs, so I can’t comment much on the other items.

Although these hot dogs reminded me of the CDN 2.50 hot dogs I had during my university days, the prices certainly didn’t.  These babies will set you back HKD 68!  Despite the disagreeing prices, I know I will be back for more.

  1. I always love reading your food posts!! This one has me craving for some street meat!! When are you coming back to get some the AUTHENTIC way (eating while standing on the street, loaded so full of toppings that you make a mess over yourself and the around you with every bite)??? 😉

    • Thanks Carm for reading my blog! I can’t wait to get some street meat when I visit later in the year. And you are right, the best way is to eat hot dogs is to have the toppings spill out onto your tray (and your shirt) with every bite!
